Andreas Derleth, a German living in New Zealand won this years Mr. Gay World 2012 held in South Africa. However the competition was hounded by African candidates withdrawing from the competition. In most parts of Africa, sodomy is still considered a criminal offense punishable by death. This was not the first time this competition caused much controversy. In 2010, China reprimanded Mr. Gay World-China representative for disobeying authorities in joining the said competition. Carlito Floro Rosadino Jr., Philippines representative to the competition won Best in Costume and Peoples Choice Award.
