Reading this article, it made me realize that the Army is fully aware of homosexual soldiers in its organization and they somehow just tolerate them as long as they follow the army code and conduct.

There are still challenges for gays in the military.  The Philippine Army still does not recognize gay partnership.

Hopefully in the feature gays would be given the same rights and privileges as straight couples.

1,000th Blog Post

HIV AIDS in Cagayan de Oro City

In past years, there has been a sudden increase of HIV-AIDS cases in the Philippines, most of which was through male-to-male sex.  The Department of Health has already declared an AIDS epidemic outbreak in the Philippines including Cagayan de Oro City.

For the first time in decades, the HIV-AIDS case in Cagayan de Oro City has reached double digits.  Here are the full statistics in the past years:

2008 - 6 cases

2009 - 9 cases

2010 - 14 cases
 2011 - 27 cases
2012 - 52 cases
2013 - 88 cases

Based on the statistics, the average rate of the viral infection is almost at One Hundred (100%) percent.  If we follow this trend by 2014, the HIV-AIDS cases in the city will reach the 100 mark. 

If you are from Cagayan de Oro City, call the AIDS Hotline number (8822-area code) 72-1189.  This is a service by the City Health Office of Cagayan  de Oro.  They will entertain your questions without malice.  If they do insult or embarrass you in anyway, call the attention of the City Health Officers and report such incident.  These people are supposed to assist you in anyway.

How did Discreet Bai started?  Prepare for a long story....

I stayed in Cebu for almost 10 years (1990's).  While I was there, I was fairly active in gay chatrooms.  Cebu's gay community at that time was already in full bloom.  I got involved in eyeballs, hook ups, relationships and whatever.  My experiences in Cebu made me who I am today.  Didto sad ko naka tuon ug mga binuang.

At that time, there were already a few gay chatters in Cagayan de Oro.  In fact I already met some of them everytime I went back to CDO for a vacation.  So around 1999, I decided to invite chatters from CDO to a so called "grand eyeball" in the former Warehouse Bar.  Unfortunately only 2 persons showed up namely Jaycee and Cleric.  We discussed the possibilities of setting up a gay chatroom in CDO and the name for the chatroom.  Names like Gay CDO or Gay Cagayan de Oro were suggested but I sensed people were a bit "discreet" about their sexuality especially in Cagayan de Oro.  After months of exchanging ideas with other CDO chatters, I decided on the name Discreet Bai.

I patterned the name Discreet Bai from a Cebu based gay chatroom named Discreet Dudes.  I simply removed the word Dude and replaced it with Bai (actually spelled "Bay"), which also translates to dude or friend.  Bai was also the name of a popular club in Cebu located in Cebu Plaza Hotel (now Marco Polo Plaza Cebu).

Since I was still in Cebu and I did not really had any "permanent" email address to register the name Discreet Bai in the MIRC chatroom.  I asked my friend who ran an internet cafe to register the name in my behalf.  Since my friend was doing all the necessary work to register the Discreet Bai chatroom, I told him that he should become the Manager of the chatroom while I become his Co-Manager/Founder of DiscreetBai.  Months passed and my friend kept on failing to register Discreet Bai, until the unthinkable happened.  Someone who I did not know registered the Discreet Bai name.  I was disappointed and frustrated.  Someone stole Discreet Bai from me.

What was done, was done.  I told the stranger who registered Discreet Bai about my situation.  That Discreet Bai was my creation and I hope he respects it.  So he made me somehow Co-Manager of the chatroom.  All was well until I found out that he made his newly found boy friend Co-Manager and was ranked higher than me.  I felt insulted.  Aside from that we were not getting along with my ideas for the chatroom.  So I decided to leave the chatroom and formed my own chatroom in a different server.   The new chatroom was doing well until the server crashed for several months.  After several attempts to relaunch the chatroom, it failed.

Luckily another friend of mine created Discreet Bai Yahoo Groups.  He allowed me to push my ideas and manage the Group as I envisioned it.  It was a blessing.  Discreet Bai Yahoo Group had fun filled years until it was hacked and the Group deleted.  It was another set back for me.

However this did not stop me from further promoting Discreet Bai online.   Sensing that social media was becoming the trend,   I decided to register the name Discreet Bai in Friendster, then Facebook and Twitter.  I was also able to create a Forum site for Discreet Bai in Webs.com.  The forum site was a success.  It gathered gay people all over CDO and gave them a venue to discuss everyday life.  However it did not last long.  The site was suspended and eventually deleted.  Back to square one.

After the suspension of Discreet Bai forum site, I decided enough is enough.  I have find a more permanent site for Discreet Bai.  So it dawned on me that I should reserve the domain name DiscreetBai.com.  So in 2011 I decided to open a blog named Discreet CDO and a few months later renamed it to DiscreetBai.com.

After years of ups and downs, I feel confident Discreet Bai is now here to stay.  Hopefully it will be known as a venue for gay and bisexual men of Cagayan de Oro to meet and interact with each other.  To all who has supported Discreet Bai through the years.....Salamat!  Thank you!

Tips to avoid getting robbed in Cagayan de Oro

There have been incidents of robbery or fraud in Cagayan de Oro involving gay people.

To avoid getting swindled or robbed, here are some advise or tips to follow :

1. When meeting someone online, check their Facebook account or if not see each other through webcam. Today, most people have Facebook or webcams, so if that person does not have one, that is a warning sign.

2. If the person you meet online wants to meet with you immediately in your hotel room or apartment, that is a warning sign. Meet this person first in a public area or through webcam. If you do not like the person you are meeting, you can make an excuse and leave the place or simply turn off the webcam.

3. If you bring these strangers to your hotel room or apartment/home, make sure the hotel has a CCTV camera and the guy should register or surrender an ID to the hotel receptionist. Better yet, leave your valuables with the hotel receptionist for safe keeping and instruct them never to give it to anyone except you. Take a photo of the guy using your phone and send it to friends. If at home, make sure someone is at home to assist you in case of emergencies.

4. Gay swindlers are now in social networking sites. If the profile photo is not the same with the actual person you meet, that is a warning sign. Make an excuse and leave immediately. Do not anymore entertain them.

5. If someone asks you for a night out with his so called "friends and cousins", that is a warning sign. You might end up paying all of the drinks and even more. Sometimes you go out in a date, only to find out that his "cousin" will join you later. If this happens, make an excuse and leave! These swindlers sometimes operate in pairs or groups.

6. When in a motel, if the guy insists that you take a shower first, this is a warning sign. This is an opportunity for these swindlers to take your belongings and even your clothes. If you shower, take your clothes with you inside the bathroom and lock the door.

7. If you meet someone new and that guy wants to have sex with you, ask that person, are you a call boy? Some of these guys would not tell you that they are call boys. After sex they would suddenly ask money from you, even though you have not talked about it.

8. If a gay swindler threatens you that he will create a scene or "mag eskandalo" if you do not give your belongings, you should reply....GO AHEAD! PAG ESKANDALO. These swindlers are just bluffing. They do not really want to create a scene or else they will get involved in it and their identity exposed.

9. Beware of "masseurs" advertising their massage services online. There have been complaints of theft and swindling. It is best to get recommendations from friends or a reliable website.

10. Cagayan de Oro has a high HIV AIDS infection rate in Northern Mindanao. Every year infection rate in the city doubles (100% increase). You should not only be concerned about your physical safety when dealing with these call boys but your health as well.

According to a world wide survey, the Filipinos ranked 3rd in the worlds heavy drinkers.  South Koreans ranked 1st, followed by Russians.  What amazed me is that we beat the Americans and Europeans who are known to be heavy drinkers.  I guess this is the very reason why Koreans love to visit the Philippines? 

On a serious note, I vowed to keep myself sober.  I used to drink a lot and was already becoming an alcoholic.  I am glad that I stopped because I was already embarrassing myself in public.  It is good to drink occasionally or socially but too much is not good.  You really have to control it before it controls you.  AND DO NOT FORGET...DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!

Child pornography and abuse in Cagayan de Oro

When I read the news that Cagayan de Oro was among the places in the Philippines named as a hot spot for child pornography, I was shocked.  Then I remembered the Swiss nationals who were arrested a few years ago for operating a cyber sex den in Cagayan.  It saddens me that Cagayan de Oro, my birthplace is now a haven for pedophiles.

Now this might be an adult website but I do not support child pornography!  I find it disturbing and disgusting that children are being used and abused by adults.

I have known friends who as children were abused by gay adults or pedophiles.  Most of my friends who were abused somehow believed that the abuse caused their being gay.  It really breaks my heart that they had a traumatic childhood.  They are not yet supposed to experience the burden of adult life at an early age.

This is a big embarrassment for Cagayan de Oro and its citizens.  We must do something to stop these pedophiles from abusing our children. I just hope that these pedophiles would be arrested ASAP.

Results of the poll survey

The results are finally in!  Last month I asked people to answer this simple question...in which school in Cagayan de Oro can you find handsome college guys?  

Out of 32 respondents, 22 respondents or 68% said Xavier University is the place to hang out and find these handsome college guys in Cagayan de Oro.  At 2nd place, a tie between Cagayan de Oro College (COC) and Liceo de Cagayan University at 6 respondents each or 18%.  It is then followed by MUST at 12% and Capitol University at 9%.

Based on this result, it is practically the same in the previous poll.  Xavier University still holds the top spot, followed by Liceo and Cagayan de Oro College.
