Let Grace Be Total

The United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) approved “Let Grace Be Total,” a policy statement on lesbians, gays, bisexual, and transgender people in its 10th Quadrennial General Assembly and 66th Founding Anniversary. 

“This affirms that all of us regardless of any category are under the grace of God. The statement means that LGBTs should not be discriminated but should be unconditionally accepted in the fellowship and membership of the Church,” says Bishop Reuel Marigza, UCCP General Secretary.

Slow internet in CDO

A question for those living in Cagayan de Oro, is your internet access sluggish lately?  I am having problems watching YouTube and uploading videos.  This has been going on for several days now.  Frustrating!  But compared to my previous internet provider, this is way better.

YouTube and vlogs

I recently subscribed to several gay and even straight YouTube vlogs to deal with my depression.  Yes I am depressed and only Zac Efron could cheer me up! :)  Oh Zac....I want to spoon you....hehehehe  Anyway, watching YouTube vlogs for the past months made me realize that these vlogs can actually compete with reality TV shows.  Some of the materials in YouTube are quite good and entertaining.  And to top it all, you can earn from these vlogs.  

According to a Wikipedia article, one YouTube vlogger was able to earn as much as 720,000 US Dollars in a year or 60,000 US Dollars a month.  This is crazy money for a YouTube channel.  I guess that already includes product endorsements and stuff.

Amongst the well known gay vloggers in YouTube is Tyler Oakley who has a subscriber base close to 6 million people.  He has hosted red carpet events, meet the US President, did a video with the US First Lady, won a Teens Choice Award and many more.  And he is just 25.  He is the face of the LGBT community in YouTube.  The Advocate Magazine has even acknowledge him for his LGBT advocacy in YouTube.

HIV AIDS in Cagayan de Oro City

In past years, there has been a sudden increase of HIV-AIDS cases in the Philippines, most of which was through male-to-male sex.  The Department of Health has already declared an AIDS epidemic outbreak in the Philippines including Cagayan de Oro City.

For the first time in decades, the HIV-AIDS case in Cagayan de Oro City has reached double digits.  Here are the full statistics in the past years:

2008 - 6 cases

2009 - 9 cases

2010 - 14 cases
 2011 - 27 cases
2012 - 52 cases
2013 - 88 cases

Based on the statistics, the average rate of the viral infection is almost at One Hundred (100%) percent.  If we follow this trend by 2014, the HIV-AIDS cases in the city will reach the 100 mark. 

If you are from Cagayan de Oro City, call the AIDS Hotline number (8822-area code) 72-1189.  This is a service by the City Health Office of Cagayan  de Oro.  They will entertain your questions without malice.  If they do insult or embarrass you in anyway, call the attention of the City Health Officers and report such incident.  These people are supposed to assist you in anyway.

Gays banned from donating blood

I read in a recent article that the US was planning to lift a ban on gay blood donors.  In the 1970's gay men were banned from donating blood because of the AIDS scare.  However the US health regulators remain skeptical on this plan.  The fear is that blood contamination might become rampant and would put blood recipients at risk.

I am not sure if the Philippine Red Cross still bans gay men or the LGBT community from donating blood.  The last time I read their blood donation policy, if you have a lifestyle that is prone to high risk diseases like hepatitis or HIV AIDS you are not allowed to donate, in short gay men are not allowed to donate

Openly gay mayor elected in Poland

Poland like the Philippines is majority Catholic and in a recent Polish election, the city of Slupsk elected an openly gay man as their mayor. This is good news for Poland as it tries to open up and be more accepting to all sexual orientation.

In the Philippines, we have already elected public officials who are gay but most if not all are discreet about it.  They are too afraid to open up for fear of being ridiculed and loose the election because of it.

As for Cagayan de Oro it seems being gay is no issue.  A Barangay or village in CDO elected an openly gay guy as Barangay Chairman or Village Head.  I heard there was also a lesbian elected as Barangay Chairman of another area.  And a source told me there are gay politicians in the province as well.  You know who you are ;)

Best time to come out

What is the best time to come out to your friends or family that you are gay?  The answer to this question varies in situations.  

If you are still studying, a student, you have to be more careful of your decision to come out.  If you are still dependent on your parents for finances, don't tell them yet unless you are 100% sure that they will react well to your coming out.  

What if they react badly to your coming out?  This would mean you leaving the house and losing contact with your family.  Are you prepared for this situation?

That is why it is important that if you are still a student, study hard.  After finishing college, get a job and work hard.  As soon as you feel you are already financially stable and can manage to be alone without the help of your family or even friends, then try coming out to them.

If you are not sure yet, then don't come out.  No one can force you to come out.

World AIDS Day

Today we again remember those who have died and are infected with HIV AIDS.  This disease has changed greatly the LGBT community and has affected the lives of people around the world.

While HIV infection in the western hemisphere has gone down, in the Philippines it is a different story.  The rate of HIV infection in the Philippines has grown rapidly that a couple of years ago, the Department of Health has declared an epidemic outbreak of HIV AIDS in the Philippines.

I am encouraging everyone to use condoms and practice safe sex.  No barebacking or using of cum as lubricants.  We have to be responsible for ourselves and others!
