I read in a recent article that the US was planning to lift a ban on gay blood donors. In the 1970's gay men were banned from donating blood because of the AIDS scare. However the US health regulators remain skeptical on this plan. The fear is that blood contamination might become rampant and would put blood recipients at risk.
I am not sure if the Philippine Red Cross still bans gay men or the LGBT community from donating blood. The last time I read their blood donation policy, if you have a lifestyle that is prone to high risk diseases like hepatitis or HIV AIDS you are not allowed to donate, in short gay men are not allowed to donate

So if you look like gay they will not allow you to donate?
I do not know if they judge you by your looks but before you donate blood, you are given a health form or questionnaire to answer. They would usually ask about your sexual history. Do you engage in male to male sex? Prostitutes both male and female are also not allowed to donate blood. Drug addicts are also banned for obvious reasons. However some people do not answer the questions honestly and it has created problems in the blood bank.
I think a few years ago, a blood donor was found to be HIV positive in Cagayan de Oro. They could not track the person because he did not give his real name and contact details.
