New aggressive HIV strain discovered

Swedish researchers found a new and aggressive strain of HIV in Africa causing AIDS to form faster.

The strain was first discovered by the Swedish team in Guinea-Bissau in 2011.  With migration, the strain might have already spread around the world.

Living with HIV AIDS in Cagayan de Oro

Iam sharing this story of Mr. Grey Hu (not his real name) who is HIV positive and a resident of Cagayan de Oro City.  He shared his life story in Outrage Magazine and has given me permission to reprint his story in DiscreetBai blog.  Thanks Grey Hu.

Grey: Facing each day as a miracle unfolding

Call me Grey (not my real name). I am from south of the islands of the Philippines – Cagayan de Oro. I am HIV-positive. It’s been two months since I knew my result.

I call it as my Dark Age or simply “restless days”. I had a wonderful and simple life here in the province but I chose to work in a big city for better opportunities. Financially, my family can provide for me and my brother the things we ask for; but young as I was, I wanted more – I wanted freedom and to live independently. And so I had a very different life, and yes, I loved it. But while I enjoyed it so much, I forgot the things that matter. It was then that I got really depressed, so that I clung to short-term happiness. I became promiscuous. I enjoyed the ‘short times’ with some random guys. I had several flings and it became a pattern... a pattern of my life that I never wish happened, though it did happen and not that I ever regretted it happening.

In October 2011, I decided to come home. I was having the best and worst days of my life then. I needed to learn to love myself and to embrace the people who matter to me. I got sick most of the time then – from fever to coughing, until I was diagnosed with shingles. My self-denial did not help me. I was sick on and off until November 2012, and my family was starting to worry. I kept my composure and never thought of having the virus. In fact, I was still active in my sexual life – and, worse, I remained unsafe even then. I continued living my my life as if it’s the last day of the world for me.

Earlier this year, I got ill again, and I lost weight – around 10% of my body weight. It was the turning point in my life. I realized that I was indeed sick and that it may be something serious.

I remember earlier, on February 2012, when I got mild TB and confined in a private hospital in CDO, where I was enrolled to DOTS for free meds for TB – that moment in my life, I learned to value my family more as they were there when I was about to quit life. They did not judge me, just cared for me and gave me unconditional love. My tita, who is like my second mom, was always hands-on during those awful times. My nurse cousin was there to check on me. My mama was always there praying for my recovery. My best friends who knew my situation were there too. God became my refuge during those times. He was there and together with my family. I disconnect myself from the world for five months then, and I celebrated each day as if my last.

By mid-May, I got better and better each day. Loving yourself more is my weapon in that fight. I recovered so fast and it was amazing. A second life, indeed.
On May 28, I contacted my peer counselor from the city health department. I told him that I will take the HIV antibody test. I took it as God’s grace and courage to take the risk of getting tested. It was a risk I knew I would carry for a lifetime. In the afternoon of that same day, I got the result. I expected for it to be positive – I somehow knew I am positive. And my suspicion was proven right. As the doctor was discussing with me about my case, I just listened and thought of the things I did. I told him I needed to accept my status because I made a choice. No regrets for me now. I am now ready to face what life has brought me. This is a rebirth for me; a call for service.

It is true that one of the most difficult situations I ever dealt with is accepting my status day by day. But I became better eventually, and more loving of myself. I was indeed whole now. I dealt with this with openness and I embrace it unconditionally and with God’s grace.

My family still matters to me now. My best friends and my new friends from the advocacy molded me to become strong. I now need to choose the people who I want to share my life with.
Blaming doesn't help at all. Dealing with it with open arms and continuing living and stopping worrying do. Yoga helped me a lot, too, and being with optimistic people.

And now I hope to somehow become a voice to my fellow PLHIVs, advocating for love and for inner peace.
Yes, it may not be always easy – it took me two months to write this! But to other PLHIVs, remember that you are loved. I am praying for all of us. Let us join together and build a new “us”.

Last week, I had my CD4 count, and the result was too low – it’s only 56. I know it’s just a number. I will start taking my medications this week and I know this will help me. But already, I am better and better every day. Every day is a miracle. I am now ready to face this battle.
At the present times, I am launching my advocacy for HIV & AIDS awareness : The project Oxygen. You can check me online, thru facebook.

HUGS,

GREY HU

Oral Sex and Oral Hygiene

There are already medical reports that throat cancer is associated with oral sex.  That is why you should take good care of your oral cavity and throat.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day with an anti-bacterial toothpaste.  Use a soft type toothbrush bristle to avoid microscopic scrapes or bleeding gums.

Gargle with a mouthwash.  This will sanitize not only your mouth but throat as well.  If you can not afford mouthwash, some suggest a simple luke warm water mixed with salt.  In fact dentists recommend water and salt solution to clean an open wound after a tooth extraction.

But best of all, use condoms even during oral sex.  Oral sex using a condom might not be that satisfying but it is better safe than sorry.

Tropical Depression Zoraida

Another storm is going to hit the Philippines.  It was recently named Zoraida.  This time it will pass near Cagayan de Oro.  I think the eye of the storm will hit directly Gingoog City.

I just hope this is not a strong storm and we will be able to manage it.

Take care guys!

Malate no more?

My first taste of Malate was back in the 1990's.  An expat friend of mine which I met online brought me to The Library Comedy Bar.  It was a surreal experience.  A probinsyano in a bar filled with gay people.  It was amazing.  I was like a virgin, touch for the very first time.  My friend brought me to other bars and places around Malate which I could no longer remember.  I felt I was surrounded by family.  I was home.

Last time I went there was a few years ago.  I tried to visit a famous gay sex shop in Malate but arriving there I could not find it.  Tried using Google Map and ask people around but I could not find the shop.  Later on I found out that it closed shop a year or few years ago.  And the remaining gay bars in Malate were quiet and had few customers which discouraged me from getting in.  I was slowly waking up to a new reality.  The Malate LGBT scene was slowly dying.

Reading the Outrage Mag article on Malate only confirmed my fears.  Malate is slowly changing.  I suspect social media and other online tools has something to do with it. LGBT's can now easily hook up online and conveniently meet in any location without going to the usual rendezvous points like Malate.  Dorthy....it is time to wake up and say goodbye to Oz.

I just hope a new area would soon rise and become the next Malate of the Philippines.  The Filipino LGBT community deserves a place of its own.

Our prayers to the victims of Typhoon Yolanda

I want to express my condolences and prayers to the victims of Typhoon Yolanda.  According to some experts, Typhoon Yolanda is one if not the strongest storm ever recorded in the entire world.  With winds at 300+ kilometers per hour, expect massive destruction and loss of lives.

We are quite lucky in Cagayan de Oro City that we escaped the wrath of the typhoon.  I saw some videos of the storm and it is chilling.  I do not think our house would be able to withstand that storm.

This should be a warning to all of us in Cagayan de Oro and other parts of the Philippines.  We should prepare.  Build homes that can withstand typhoons.  Build homes away from bodies of water.

Typhoon Yolanda

Typhoon Yolanda with international name Haiyan is expected to make landfall in the Philippines by Friday morning.  However rains and winds would be felt as early as Thursday evening.

According to weather bureau PAGASA, Cagayan de Oro City and neighboring areas will be affected but not within the path of the typhoon.  However this does not mean that Cagayan de Oro is safe.  Yolanda will bring intense rains and winds within Misamis Oriental including Cagayan de Oro.  Some say we might experience signal no. 3, the highest signal ever experienced in this region.  The highest storm signal number is 4.

Preparations are now ongoing.  People are now being evacuated.  If you have not yet done some preparations, do so now.

I am expecting power outages by Friday and Saturday.  So do not be surprised if I have not posted anything for the next few days.

Be safe guys!

Swindlers victimizing gay tourists in CDO

I was in Gay Romeo recently warning people about gay swindlers in Cagayan.  Someone sent me a message and warned me that these swindlers has profiles in Gay Romeo and are still victimizing gays in the city.

These swindlers do not use their own photos.  That is why it is important to see each other first through webcam or in a public place.  If he does not show his face on cam but instead shows his dick or body then there is something wrong.  He is trying to hide something.  Do not fall for this.

Always be on alert when meeting strangers.  If you get victimized by these swindlers report them to the police.  This is the only way for the police to know what is going on.  If the police notices that the swindling activities are becoming rampant, this would force them to act on it.

How to flirt in the street

The double look back has been a tried and tested flirting scheme used by gay people when cruising for guys in the streets.

If you see a cute guy walking towards you....

1. Make eye contact.  Try to connect with him through your eyes.

2. Keep your glance and lock eyes with him

3. Instead of dropping your eyes, keep glancing at him until you pass him

4. Slow your walking pace and look back over your shoulder, glance at the person.

5. If the guy does the same then you've got him

6. Slowly turn around and stop or walk towards him and start a conversation

It takes practice and finesse to perfect the double look back.  Again it has to be smooth and playful.

Its Halloween!!

Expect heavy traffic along roads leading to cemeteries.  If possible carpool to minimize cars in the roads.  By now cemeteries are packed with people.  Do not forget to bring along your mosquito repellants and umbrellas.

This is also the best time for gay people to dress up and not be discriminated.

Enjoy your long weekend!

HIV AIDS in Cagayan de Oro City

In past years, there has been a sudden increase of HIV-AIDS cases in the Philippines, most of which was through male-to-male sex.  The Department of Health has already declared an AIDS epidemic outbreak in the Philippines including Cagayan de Oro City.

For the first time in decades, the HIV-AIDS case in Cagayan de Oro City has reached double digits.  Here are the full statistics in the past years:

2008 - 6 cases
2009 - 9 cases
2010 - 14 cases
 2011 - 27 cases
2012 - 52 cases

Based on the statistics, the rate of the viral infection is at One Hundred (100%) percent annually.  If we follow this trend, in 2013, the HIV-AIDS cases in the city will reach the 100 mark.

If you are from Cagayan de Oro City, call the AIDS Hotline number (8822-area code) 72-1189.  This is a service by the City Health Office of Cagayan  de Oro.  They will entertain your questions without malice.  If they do insult or embarrass you in anyway, call the attention of the City Health Officers and report such incident.  These people are supposed to assist you in anyway.
