Truvada is a combination of two antiretroviral medications – tenofovir and emtricitabine. It has been used before as a medication for HIV AIDS. Now the US has approved its use for HIV prevention.
Some HIV groups are alarmed by this development. They believe that this will have consequences in the fight against HIV AIDS. People would instead stop practicing safe sex and use the drug as a form of recreation instead of a cure.
The drug is however not 100% full proof. According to studies, Truvada is effective in HIV transmission by up to 92% if taken daily. And the cost of the drug? A months supply of Truvada will cost you around 1,200 to 2,000 US Dollar or around 90,000 Pesos (taxes might make the drug cost more).
